Lada Nakonechna

born 1981 in Ukraine,
lives and works in Kiev.

Artist and curator, Nakonechna works with drawing, photography, video and performance. Since 2004, member of the group R.E.P. (Revolutionary Experimental Space). Member and founder of the curatorial collective Hudrada. Nakonechna has an interest mainly in the questions of vision and visibility, as well as social and political problems.

“Personal Shield” is a sculpture made by the artist in Switzerland in 2011. The work recreates an object found in the cityscape of Zurich – a small fence that closed the way between two buildings. Nakonechna adopted a literal approach to  that object of spontaneously emerging architecture as a symbol of contemporary alienation – a handy mobile shield with spikes is not only a tool of defence against other people but also a guarantee of keeping them at bay. “Personal Shield” is able to protect a personal “safety zone” that is restricted to other people. Thus, the artist refers to the elements of power and violence that permeate social life – to the desire to become isolated from the needs and problems of others and to the pursuit of one’s own convenience and personal comfort.
